“Doing these sorts of things actually creates positive energy. It doesn't drain you at all. I know. I've been practising some of these. For example, I'm trying to use my Initiative strength now in this meeting, a strength I usually reserve for other places. I'm finding that thinking and acting in this new way is helping me get through my ‘to do’ list quicker than ever before. I'm even finding time to go to the gym again,” Joe explains.

“Isn't this just another way of saying ‘do more with less’ to an already overstretched team?” cuts in Raj.

“Well, that's one way to look at it. Some would say that ‘do more with less’ is the definition of innovation. I think most of our staff would like to be thought of as innovators. I guess the thing to point out is that stretching your strengths is not about working harder. It's about working smarter, and that if they're doing work focusing on what comes naturally, then they will feel more energized. I know I do.”

Joe pauses. It seems as if everybody is listening. He decides to go one step further. Turning to the flip chart, he asks:

“What's the alternative?”

Drawing a line down the middle of the page, he labels one side “Limitation” and the other “Possibility”.

“As I see it, there are two alternatives. We can either keep on the path of limitation, or move to the path of possibility.”

Leading a brainstorming session, he completes the sheet as shown in Table 1.
